Severe explosion hazard. This material is extremely unstable when dry. The slightest shock or heat will cause it to decompose explosively. Readily formed from ammonia and iodine. It should be kept moist. Can self-explode. Explodes with friction (even when moist) and heat. When heated to decomposition it emits highly toxic fumes of I−, NOx, and NH3.
